I Am The Crooked Dragon

Sam Jokisch
I have been called ‘Crooked’ online for over a decade now. It’s origins are rooted in my usual self-loathing bullshit: I have never liked myself, and have struggled to let my freak flag fly all of my life. I’m awkward, dorky, and often annoying. I cry a lot. I overshare out of helplessness. I struggle with criticism that seems rooted in nothing constructive and quickly become defensive. I am anxious every minute of every hour of every day in some form or another. But I have learned with time and reflection that as long as I’m actively working on myself, doing my best to create the best version of me I can be, and moving towards better self-control and enlightenment, imperfections aren't damning.‘Crooked’ is a celebration of my weaknesses, and a constant reminder to myself that even on days when I’m a pain in the ass or bitchy or whatever, I know I get up every day and try to be the best version of me possible. As long as I do my best to be good and kind and loving, it’s okay to be a little Crooked. In my hometown there was a strange old psychic that did cheap readings and was a popular entertainer of bored teenagers. (We literally called him Psychic Bill. Idk man.) During an aura reading he told me that an incredibly deep, growly song can be sensed in my aura, and that I’ll often be drawn to similar sounds throughout my life. He told me it was dragon song, and that I clearly had some sort of dragon spirit or spirits with me standing guard.I can’t say just how real any of this was since I was just a dumb kid with no ties to my spiritual side yet, but the story still follows me today and makes me feel safe, loved, and connected to another world. Dragons have always felt like comfort and family, so I’ve made it my truth. I also have an ungodly hunger for deep-voiced men. Maybe I AM a dragon.
